Almost all of the companies reviewed will dispute negative items with bureaus and creditors on your behalf. It’s essential that you sign up for credit restoration with a company that provides this service, because working with both creditors and bureaus is very effective. If the agency doesn’t settle the dispute in your favor, you still have some juice left. (Read “Credit Builders“.) Tell the agencies to include a statement about the dispute in your file. Also, tell them to give anyone who gets a copy of your credit report a copy of your dispute statement. They have to comply. You might have to pay for this, but it might be very helpful in neutralizing a bogus hit against your credit that you can’t resolve otherwise. If all else fails, contact a company like Lexington Law to see if they might be able to throw their weight around on your behalf.
Once you've paid down the balance of your credit cards, keep your spending on these accounts down. You should aim for a balance that is less than 30% of your credit limit on the card. Don't voluntarily lower credit limits; this can hurt rather than help your FICO® Score. If your credit report doesn't reflect your actual credit limit, make sure your credit card company updates this information with the credit bureaus. In addition to limiting your spending on the accounts you already have, be cautious when any new accounts and don't cancel any old accounts since these help your credit score by demonstrating a longer credit history.
